E-ink screens are better for the eyes.
E Ink dominates in static, text-heavy, long-duration, ambient-light scenarios. OLED dominates in everything else. The distinction is not subtle. It is absolute.
Every meaningful difference between E Ink and OLED traces back to one architectural divergence: E Ink reflects light, while OLED emits it. This single fact-easy to overlook if you're just skimming spec sheets-determines power consumption, eye strain, outdoor visibility, color capability, refresh rate, and device longevity. Once you internalize this distinction, most confusion about when to use which technology simply evaporates.
How E Ink Works (And Why I Find It Fascinating)

I'll spend more time on E Ink here because most people already understand OLED intuitively-it's just a screen that lights up. E Ink is the weird one.
E Ink screens contain millions of microcapsules, each filled with positively charged white particles and negatively charged black particles suspended in clear fluid. Applying an electric field drives particles to the top or bottom of each capsule, creating visible patterns.
Once particles settle, they stay in place indefinitely without electricity. A turned-off E Ink device still shows its last screen. I've left a Kindle untouched for months and returned to find the same page displayed, battery barely drained.
The tradeoff? Physical particle movement takes 100-300 milliseconds. Full-page transitions produce visible flicker. Ghosting artifacts persist between refreshes. It's slow in a way that feels almost anachronistic in 2024.
OLED is the opposite philosophy-organic compounds emit photons when current flows, each pixel is an independent light source, response times measured in microseconds, but remove power and everything goes black instantly.

Eye Strain-This Is Where E Ink Pulls Ahead
And it's not even close.
The human visual system evolved processing reflected light-sunlight bouncing off surfaces. Staring directly at a light source is physiologically abnormal. OLED places a light-emitting surface centimeters from the cornea for hours at a time.
I could walk you through the three mechanisms-direct emission fatigue, PWM flicker sensitivity, blue light intensity-but here's what actually matters: after four hours of reading on OLED, my eyes feel like sandpaper. After four hours on E Ink, they don't. That's not placebo. That's physics.

The PWM thing deserves a quick mention because it affects some people severely. OLED brightness control typically uses Pulse Width Modulation-rapidly switching pixels on and off. At low brightness, the "off" periods lengthen. Some individuals experience headaches or nausea from PWM frequencies below 240Hz. E Ink has no flicker mechanism whatsoever. If you've ever felt vaguely unwell using your phone in a dark room but couldn't explain why, PWM might be the culprit.
Caveat: E Ink devices with front-lighting reintroduce some direct-emission characteristics. However, front-lit E Ink still directs light at the screen surface, not directly at the eye, preserving most ergonomic advantages.
Power Consumption
E Ink draws ~15mW during page turns and essentially zero displaying static content. OLED draws 300-800mW continuously. A Kindle Paperwhite lasts weeks. An OLED phone with three times the battery capacity lasts hours.
No amount of engineering will close this gap. It's fundamental to how each technology operates.

But OLED Absolutely Crushes E Ink in Raw Performance
I've spent the last few sections praising E Ink, so let me be blunt about its limitations.
Contrast ratio: E Ink sits around 15:1. OLED? Effectively infinite-the pixels turn off completely.
Color: Don't even ask. Color E Ink exists (Kaleido, Gallery) but it's washed-out, muted, covers maybe 20% of sRGB. OLED exceeds 100% of DCI-P3. The comparison is embarrassing.
Refresh rate and response time: E Ink manages 1-15 Hz. OLED hits 120-240 Hz. This isn't a marginal difference. It's the difference between a flipbook and a movie.
For any task involving motion, color accuracy, or rapid interaction-E Ink is not merely inferior. It is non-functional.
Outdoor Visibility

I've seen people claim E Ink is universally better outdoors, but that's sloppy thinking.
Direct sunlight? E Ink wins easily. It leverages sunlight rather than competing against it-more ambient light means better visibility. An E Ink screen in direct sun looks like paper in direct sun.
Darkness? OLED wins completely. E Ink without front-lighting is literally invisible. Meanwhile OLED excels because black pixels emit zero light, so contrast approaches infinity.
"Outdoor use" isn't a single category. Beach reading at noon? E Ink. Evening patio browsing? OLED.
Burn-in and Longevity
OLED suffers from burn-in-permanent image retention from uneven pixel degradation. Static UI elements age their corresponding pixels faster. Over years, ghost images appear. Manufacturers mitigate this with pixel shifting and brightness limiting, but the fundamental problem remains.
E Ink experiences temporary ghosting that resolves with full-screen refreshes. Permanent damage is rare.
That said, I'm not going to exaggerate this difference. Recent OLED panels have improved dramatically. For most users replacing phones every 2-3 years, burn-in will never become visible. It's a real issue, but not the dealbreaker it was five years ago.
Device Ecosystem
OLED wins by default. It powers virtually every premium smartphone, tablet, laptop, and television.
E Ink remains niche: dedicated e-readers, a handful of tablets, some specialty phones. The selection is limited, prices elevated, software optimization inconsistent. This reflects market realities-E Ink's constraints make it unsuitable for general-purpose computing, and the niche market can't support massive R&D investment.
So Which One Should You Actually Get?
The choice between E Ink and OLED is not a matter of preference. It is a matter of task alignment.
E Ink makes sense for:
Extended text consumption-books, academic papers, long-form articles. Sessions exceeding 30 minutes. The eye strain reduction and battery longevity compound over time. Serious readers, those consuming 20+ books annually, gain measurable quality-of-life improvements.
Distraction elimination. E Ink's limitations become features in attention-management contexts. Slow refresh discourages compulsive app-switching. Monochrome reduces visual stimulation. For deliberate reading or focused work, these constraints serve the user.
Outdoor-primary use and sleep hygiene optimization also favor E Ink, but I suspect if those apply to you, you already know it.
OLED makes sense for:
Everything else. Video. Photography. Gaming. Social media. Web browsing. Productivity applications. Creative work. Any task requiring color, motion, or rapid interaction.
Here's What I Think
Framing E Ink and OLED as competitors misunderstands both technologies.
E Ink is a specialist. It does one thing-display static text-better than any alternative. Within its domain, nothing else comes close. Not OLED, not LCD, and honestly not even paper itself, which lacks adjustable font size, built-in lighting, and infinite content storage.
OLED is a generalist. It handles diverse demands with uniformly excellent results. It cannot match E Ink's reading experience, but it can do a thousand things E Ink cannot do at all.
The optimal configuration for serious readers and knowledge workers is not E Ink OR OLED. It is E Ink AND OLED. A dedicated E Ink reader for books. An OLED phone for everything else. The incremental cost of an entry-level e-reader-often under $100-delivers disproportionate returns in reading comfort and focus.
